Skill Cues
1. Falling Forward
  • used to decrease the chance of injury 
  • Remember: increase time of fall, increase the amount of body contact 
  • Once students are comfortable, they can move to standing straddle and the standing straight
  • Standing on knees, with arms out and hands pointing slightly in
  • Fall forward
  • Finger tips contact first, then hands and then bend arms to increase time and contact of fall
2. Falling Backward
  • Remember: increase time and contact of fall
  • used to decrease the chance of injury
  • Standing on feet, crouched into a ball with hand reaching backward
  • Fall Backwards with hands reaching back to contact mat first
  • Hands contact mat, lower back and arms, then shoulders 
3. Front Support
  • Lie face down on the mat
  • Hands are placed beside the shoulders and are pointing slightly inward
  • Lift body off the mat
  • Body must be straight and tight
  • Lift body
  • Hands pointing lightly inward
  • Body is straight and tight
4. Rear Support
  • Lie flat on back
  • Push body up 
  • Body should be straight and tight
  • Lift body
  • Tight body
  • Hands toward toes
5. Forward Roll
  • Students can use an incline (triangle mat) and roll down the incline if having troubles
  • Start in crouch or tuck position with arms out in front
  • Place hand shoulder width apart
  • Push off legs
  • Tuck head under
  • Reach forward and stand up on feet
  • Squat with arms forward
  • Extend legs and tuck head under
  • Reach forward with arms and stand up on feet
6. Backward Safety Roll
  • Students can use an incline (triangle mat) and roll down the incline if having trouble
  • Start is a tuck position on feet with arm out in front
  • Roll backwards on back
  • Place on arm out to the side and look over that shoulder
  • Bring legs and the body over the same shoulder
  • Finish in tuck position on feet
  • Tuck position with arms out front
  • Roll back and place one are to the side on the mat
  • Look over shoulder, bring legs and then body over shoulder
7. Headstand
  • Students will progress from a teddy bear stand to headstand
Teddy Bear Stand
  • Start from kneeling, place hands on mat shoulder width apart
  • From a triangle with hands by placing top of forehead on mat
  • Raise knees and place them on elbows raise hips over shoulders
Headstand
  • Starting with the triangle
  • Pike legs and walk toes to head to push hips over shoulders
  • Tuck legs in and extend them into a vertical position
  • Keep body tight in vertical position
Straddle and Pike headstands are extensions of this skill.  Both have the same starting position for the hands and head.  For the Straddle headstand, start with legs straddle and then bring them together in the vertical position.  For the Pike headstand, legs are not tucked in but brought straight into the vertical position.
Teddy Bear Stand
  • Make triangle with hands and forehead
  • Place knees on elbows
  • Raise hips over shoulders
Headstand
  • Make triangle with hands and forehead
  • Pike legs to bring hips over shoulders
  • Tuck legs and then extend them to a tight vertical position
8. Handstand
  • Students will start with a half handstand, which will be expected from all students
  • And if students feel comfortable can move to a full handstand and then a handstand into a forward roll
Half Handstand
  • Start in a lunge position with dominant leg forward, arms are extended above head
  • Place hands shoulder width apart on the mat
  • Eyes should be looking down between hands
  • Non dominant leg kicks up 
  • Point toes
Full Handstand
  • Lunge with dominant leg forward
  • Place hands shoulder width apart, keeping arms straight
  • Kick up with non dominant leg
  • Then bring legs together, keeping body tight and pushing down on mat
Handstand Forward Roll
  • Perform a full handstand 
  • Lean body over hands
  • Bend arms and tuck head under
  • Reach forward with hands and stand up
Half Handstand
  • Lunge with dominant leg forward
  • Place hand shoulder width apart and keep straight
  • Kick up with non dominant leg, with pointed toes
Full Handstand
  • Lunge with dominant leg forward
  • Place hands on mat and kick up with dominant leg
  • Bring legs together in a tight vertical position
Handstand to Forward Roll
  • Lunge forward with dominant leg, kick up with non dominant leg
  • Bring legs together and lean over hands
  • Bend arms and tuck head under and roll onto back
8. Cartwheel
  • If students are having trouble start with cartwheel around a circle or over a box
  • Cartwheel is performed in a straight line
  • Start in lunge position with dominant leg forward
  • Place dominant hand on mat 
  • Kick with non dominant hand
  • Place non dominant hand on mat, arms are kept straight
  • Legs are in a wide straddle above head
  • Step down with non dominant leg, dominant leg 
  • Bring hands off mat
  • Should in a lunge facing opposite direction the when started
  • Sequence: Hand-hand-foot-foot
Cartwheel on a Box
  • Hands are placed on the box and legs are kicked over the side
  • Sequence is still Hand-hand-foot-foot
Cartwheel Around a Circle
  • Make a circle on a mat with chalk or tape
  • Student tries cartwheel by placing hand-hand-foot-foot on the circle
  • Lunge with dominant foot
  • Hand-hand-foot-foot
  • Finish with lunge in opposite direction
9. Major Gymnastics Positions
  • These are the major positions in gymnastics
  • They can be used for starting and finishing positions 
  • Can also be used in flight
  • Tuck position
  • Straddle position
  • Pike position
  • V-sit
Tuck Position
  • Sitting on mat, knees to chest
  • Arms around knees
Straddle Position
  • Sitting on mat, legs are wide and tight
  • Arms in same position
  • Back straight, head up, toes pointed
Pike Position
  • Sitting on mat, legs straight out in front and tight
  • Arms straight out
  • Back straight, head up and toes pointed
V-Sit
  • Sitting on mat
  • Legs and arms are in a V position, toes are pointed
  • Maintain balance, it this is too hard hand may be placed beside body
10. Landings
  • Feet shoulder width apart
  • Land on toes then the rest of foot
  • Knees bent but not past 90 degrees
  • Arms out infront for balance
  • Feet shoulder width apart
  • Knees bent
  • Arms out infront
11. Flight Skills
  • Tuck Jump
  • Straddle Jump
  • Star Jump
  • Pike Jump

Tuck Jump
  • Knees to chest
  • Land with knees bent
  • Arm out infront and head up
Straddle Jump
  • Straddle position, point toes
  • Arms reaching for toes
  • Land with knees bent and arms out
Star Jump
  • Legs spread
  • Arms reaching out and up (looking like a star)
  • Land with knees bent and arms out front
Pike Jump
  • Pike legs in the air, pointing toes
  • Arms reach for toes
  • Land with knees bent and arms out front
Pencil Jump
  • Legs pointed down, toes pointed, body tight
  • Arms reaching above head
  • Land with knees bent and arms out
